We’re excited to welcome more students to campus in September. To ensure the safe gradual transition to more in-person activities students living in residence and students participating in varsity sports must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 for the Fall 2021 semester.
Chris McGrath, Vice-President, Student Success; Melissa Gallo, Director, Student Engagement and Career Success; and Melanie Gerin-Lajoie, Manager, Athletics and Recreation announced the vaccine requirement on July 19.
“We made this decision so that our students can have a richer and more fulfilling student experience," McGrath said. “It will also allow us to provide the residence and varsity experiences to more students.”
George Brown consulted with the Student Association of George Brown College, Toronto Public Health, the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) and our athletes. Feedback was positive, and students told us they would feel safer in residence and sport with the vaccine requirement.
“We, as a college, recognize and respect our duties under the Ontario Human Rights Code, and if an individual is unable to be vaccinated due to a protected ground, we will review these situations on a case-by-case basis and will provide reasonable accommodation short of undue hardship,” Gallo said.
“We will consider requests for medical condition exemptions, and religious/creed exemptions.”
Gerin-Lajoie said the college must make varsity practices, travel and games as safe as possible.
“Varsity athletes are student leaders who represent the college and have such an important responsibility to others who support their team's competitive objectives and the overall health and safety of the college community,” she said.
George Brown will require students in residence and varsity athletes to complete an attestation, meaning they sign a form to indicate they have received two doses of COVID-19 vaccine approved by the Government of Canada —AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech. Sinopharm and Sinovac vaccines (approved by the World Health Organization) are accepted for our international students.
George Brown will not require medical records or Ontario Ministry of Health receipts.
