Once again George Brown students have impressed international fashion industry professionals with four winning scholarships from the Manhattan-based YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund.
The YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund accepts submissions from students across the United States and Canada as part of its annual case competition. Several George Brown students have received scholarships over the past several years and our 2019-2020 cohort continued the tradition.
Silvia Canovas Closa, Jillian Siu and Madeline Soubry each won US$5,000 scholarships and Barbara De Souza Pinheiro Nobre took home a $7,500 award.
“This award really highlights all the hard work I’ve put into my development as a fashion marketer and merchandiser and demonstrates my abilities as an individual to creatively problem solve and produce solutions,” said Siu, a second-year Fashion Management student. “It was incredibly gratifying to know that I was one of this year’s recipients, and I look forward to all the relationships and connections I’m able to build as I move forward into my career.”
Collaboration case study
Students win awards based on the case studies they submit. The objective of the 2019-2020 case competition was creating a collaboration between a fashion retailer or brand and a company or organization outside the fashion industry.
“My case study was a collaboration between Lululemon and National Geographic in which I created a ‘Disappearing Earth Collection’ that featured an array of clothing options that highlighted the effects of climate change on our planet and allowed for customers to create change in a sustainable and fashionable way,” said Soubry, a second-year Fashion Management student.
Siu based her case study on “creative solutions for sustainable fashion production” with a collaboration between skateboard shoes and apparel company Vans and the non-profit organization Feeding America.
“Through this collaboration, the partnership would develop plant-based dyes and colorants from food waste that could then be used to produce a line of plant-coloured footwear by Vans,” Siu explained.
Barbara De Souza Pinheiro Nobre, a second-year Fashion Management student, outlined a partnership between Adidas and 4ocean for her case study to promote plastic waste reduction in rivers around the world.
“I think this award means validation. It means that it pays off to work hard and believe in myself and my potential,” she said. “It means so much to me. It was a dream to be able to go through the experience in New York.”
We want to send a big congratulations to our students on their awards and we also want to give a shout-out to their faculty mentor Vladimira Steffek and the other faculty members who provided student support, Ingrid Wagemans, Constantine Campaniaris, Tanya Brockley and Bill McAskill.
