Toronto, Ontario (July 23, 2020) – Foodies can now watch Merci Bocuse, an exhilarating documentary that follows a George Brown College chef’s journey to the “Olympics of the culinary world” on Amazon Prime Video.

Merci Bocuse follows a team of chefs including several recent George Brown College graduates and employees as they represent Canada at one of the world’s most prestigious culinary competitions, Bocuse d’Or.
The competition takes place every two years and showcases the finest young chefs from around the world. The esteemed event was created by legendary chef Paul Bocuse, as a way to get chefs out from behind the scenes and into the spotlight.
Filmed over two years in Toronto, Mexico City and Lyon, France, the documentary was picked up by Los Angeles-based distributor Indie Rights. It premiered at Devour: The Food Film Fest, the world’s biggest food film festival, in October 2019.

“The journey to Lyon had some speed bumps along the way, but that’s what made the journey so interesting. Our goals and expectations were high from day one,” said Chef John Higgins, Director of Culinary and Hospitality Enterprises, and CHCA Ambassador for the Centre for Hospitality & Culinary Arts at George Brown College. Chef Higgins who served as Bocuse d'Or President, jury member and team mentor also said, “As a team, we truly bonded and at the end of the day, the judges called the results. We did not have to like those results, but we came, we grew, and in the end, we became better chefs and humans. I was proud to be a part of Bocuse d’Or 2019 while flying the Canadian Maple Leaf and representing George Brown College.”

Filmmakers from George Brown College’s Institute without Boundaries were fortunate to have access to follow Canada’s 2019 candidate Trevor Ritchie, a Chef Technologist from George Brown College, on his journey for two years, including the final competition in France. The project was a close collaboration between George Brown College’s School of Design and the Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts, with a team of designers from the School of Design creating the impressive platters on which Trevor’s team presented their food at the competition.

“We are very proud to release the first college-produced feature-length documentary to streaming platforms,” said Andrew Wright, Producer at the Institute without Boundaries at George Brown College. “The film was truly a cross-department collaboration, drawing from the talents of staff and students in both the School of Design and the Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts. We are looking forward to future collaborations.”
