The King Street East and Old Town Toronto district is filled with many hidden gems open to the public, including two student-run operations at George Brown College’s Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts (CHCA): Chef on the Run and the GBC Cafe.
Located on the main floor of the CHCA, the student run and operated, Chef on the Run is an opportunity for first year Pastry Arts and Culinary Arts students to showcase their talents in retail, customer service, and production. Guests line up early for take home specials and the popular Black Forest and Mocha cakes, which retail for $8. “The best part about my job is that I get to see students go from great to greatness,” says Nank Chatterpaul, manager.
A the GBC Cafe, located on the second floor of the CHCA, you’ll find delicious deals from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. For around $6, hearty specials such as lasagne or mac n' cheese to fried chicken with coleslaw are on offer. Also ready to grab and go are in-season salads, gourmet pizzas, sushi, and sandwiches, all for under $6.
Heather Dyer, who oversees the operation of the cafe, says that the new cafe has been a rewarding experience. “Guests feel intrigued by helping the students in their learning progress and students learn more about guest interaction as well as the timing of production food.”
Don’t forget to grab one of the cafe’s famous chocolate chip cookies on the way out!
