Former Ontario Premier Bill Davis honoured at George Brown College reception

George Brown College Chancellor Sally Horsfall Eaton greeted special guests and thanked our supporters with a reception held at the Royal Canadian Military Institute.

More than 100 people attended the event on June 8, 2017, including former Ontario Premier Bill Davis, who was the guest speaker, George Brown College President Anne Sado, and George Brown College Foundation President Cindy Gouveia. Student award recipients Ricardo Mallaco, Temiloluwa Fashina, Jacey Wang, Jill Stagg, and Tiffany White also attended.

“Each of you have already played your part in our success; but if there is one thing which is true of our college, it is that we are ambitious,” Horsfall Eaton said.
“Together, with your support, we have come a long way, and the role we play in the social, cultural and economic health of our city and our province has never been greater”.

Chancellor Horsfall Eaton highlighted the fact that Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Ontario college system, as did Davis.

As minister of education from 1962 to 1971, Davis was a visionary who played a vital role in creating Ontario’s college system.  In his address, Davis shared his account of the activities that led to the establishment of the Ontario college system and George Brown College. He admitted that it was he who suggested that the new Toronto institution bear the name of Father of Confederation George Brown.

“The city to which George Brown offered such lustre as a reformer, journalist, and statesman should honour him this way,” he said.
In her remarks, Sado praised Davis’s leadership in post-secondary education in Ontario.

“As we begin to celebrate our 50th anniversary this year, we pay homage to Bill Davis for establishing our much-needed college system. Because of his efforts, millions of Ontarians enjoy an expanded array of post-secondary options,” she said.

“In 2017, we celebrate our tremendous gains, while enthusiastically looking ahead to the profound difference colleges will make in Ontario’s new economy over the next half-century”.
