Learning Environment

"George Brown School of Fashion Studies is one of the top 50 fashion schools in the world." Fashionista.com, Dec 2010

In the School of Fashion, your learning environment is as diverse as the fashion industry itself. You will have the opportunity to shape your learning experience and start building the career you want.

Studying at the School of Fashion will take you outside the classroom and into design studios, runways, competitions and public events where you can showcase your talent. Our students have had access to unique travel opportunities to Milan, Miami, London, India and South Korea for competitions and learning abroad. During her studies at the School of Fashion, Andrea Tucker competed in the international finals of the Triumph Inspiration Awards during Milan Fashion Week and had her design published in Italian Vogue.

George Brown's learning environment has a strong international component. In addition to sharing a classroom with international students from around the world you have several opportunities for international fieldwork and international field trips. You can also take advantage of academic pathways available to various education institutions overseas. The GBC curriculum benefits from our many global partnerships and our credentials are geared towards preparing you for the global marketplace.

Fashion Exchange

In 2016, George Brown College opened the Fashion Exchange. The Fashion Exchange is a vibrant, urban, manufacturing hub where fashion education, design, entrepreneurship, engagement, and efficient production services come together under one roof in the heart of downtown Toronto. The Fashion Exchange offers today’s aspiring fashion students and active industry professionals access to skills based, hands-on employment training programs in our manufacturing facility. Our Industrial Power Sewing and Apparel Fit Technician certificates are offered out of this facility, as well as some classes for Apparel Technical Design and Sustainable Fashion Production programs. Check out the ‘Fashion designers are making manufacturing in Canada cool again’ article in the Toronto Star.

Second year in a row, George Brown College's Fashion Techniques and Design student has been chosen as a National winner of the Remix - Canada competition. 2018 First Prize winner is Helen Yan with her three incredible garments inspired by nature and the Tibetan culture. Helen gracefully blends different colours and furs, silver fox fur, coyote, black beaver and raccoon furs, in elegant and unexpected patterns and combinations.

The George Brown College School of Fashion team won first place at the 2015 Creativ Catwalk competition at the Creativ Festival! Students competed with teams from other colleges to complete a fashion challenge with only 3 days and $200 to spend on the show floor. The final garment was completely designed, constructed and finished at the Festival and shown on the runway on Saturday. Congratulations for an amazing effort to George Brown team members: Roell Gomes, Shaoquig Guo, and Jinkyung Kim and Faculty mentor Carolyn Perry-Donnan. Our model was another fashion student Kira Oliver. The winning dress featured self-fabric made from layers of tulle, net and lace, rabbit fur trim, a jacket with chenille knit sleeves, and Swarovski crystals.
