Biography
Matt Miller is a freelance composer and sound designer for video games, film, and tv. He is also an experienced audio engineer and a passionate field recordist, capturing original musical performances as well as found sounds for sound art and sound design purposes.
Matt performs live using his laptop, DIY synths, and snippets of recorded sound which on any given day might include everything from birdsong to industrial machinery. He also sits in with various improvising ensembles in Toronto and has been fortunate enough to perform with Thin Edge New Music Collective, Fred Frith, Sylvie Courvoisier, and Gino Robair.
He was inspired by the writings of American expat composer and writer, Paul Bowles, to explore the music of Morocco and has travelled there three times to record traditional Moroccan musicians in local settings, including the legendary Mahmoud Gina and Nass Marrakesh.
Matt’s embrace of diverse musical styles and his ease with ‘no-tech’ as well as high-tech production techniques has given him a comprehensive understanding of best practices for creating music and sound in almost any context. He loves to share his years of experience with others and works hard to connect the theoretical to the practical for his students in the most meaningful way possible.
