Residence Info and FAQ for Fall 2020

As the college has begun to contact students with updates about the status of their programs for the Fall 2020 term, please review the following options and choose the one that best fits your situation. If the college has not sent out confirmation of the status of your program by June 17th, we will be extending the cancellation deadline to allow you to make a decision without being subject to cancellation fees.

I no longer require residence for the 2020/2021 Academic Year (September 2020 – April 2021).

Please cancel your application via the housing portal as soon as possible so that you are not held to the upcoming payment deadline in June. We will move forward with processing your refund once you have confirmed for us via email

I still require residence for the 2020/2021 Academic Year (September 2020 – April 2021).

Please confirm for us via email that you still require residence for the 2020/2021 academic year. Keep your application with us active and ensure you are checking your email regularly for updates. We will be connecting with students in the coming weeks as we put together our move-in plan for September 2020.

As of this time, we are intending to maintain our June 19th payment deadlines and amounts, but will not be opening roommate matching in August and will be reducing capacity to only offer single-occupancy suites for the Fall term. If you originally chose the Option 1 payment plan (all fees due up front) and would like to switch to the staggered payment deadlines of Option 2 or 3, please let us know.

Review deadlines and amounts

If you are on the waitlist for the 2020/2021 Academic Year (September 2020 - April 2021) we will not have an update on the status of your application until early July.

I do not require residence for the Fall Term (September – December 2020) but may need residence for the Winter Term (January – April 2021).

Please confirm for us via email that you do not require residence for the Fall 2020 term, and we will cancel your application but continue to keep your deposit on file for the Winter Term. If you have already paid portion of your residence fees and would like those refunded in the meantime, please let us know. We will reach out to you again later in the Fall to provide you with an update on our plans for January 2021. Please note that your Academic Year 2020/21 acceptance does not necessarily guarantee a spot for Winter 2021. We will contact you directly when we are in a position to begin Winter 2021 acceptance.

If you are on the waitlist for the 2020/2021 Academic Year (September 2020 - April 2021) we will not have an update on the status of your application until early July.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need to cancel by in order to get my money back? How soon can I expect to receive a refund?

Refunds are processed each month. Students who cancelled and confirmed by email in May can expect to receive a cheque by early July. Students cancelling and confirming by email in June prior to the June 17th cancellation deadline can expect to receive a cheque by early August. If the college has not sent out confirmation of the status of your program by June 17th, we will be extending the cancellation deadline to allow you to make a decision without being subject to cancellation fees.

What steps has the residence taken to ensure students’ safety?

We are still developing our Fall 2020 plan, but are intending to reduce capacity by 50% so that students will not have a roommate for the Fall term (September-December 2020) and to stagger our move-in dates/times. The measures that we’ve taken so far to protect Summer 2020 students have included cancelling all in-person residence life programming, reallocating housekeeping staff from occupied

student suites to focus on high-traffic common areas, suspending guest sign-in to limit the number of people entering the building, increasing the number of hand sanitizer stations, installing barriers at the front desk, and moving to contactless package/mail pickup.

Are fees still due in June?

In order to secure your spot for the 2020/2021 Academic Year (September 2020 – April 2021), you must make payment on or before June 19th. If you originally chose the Option 1 payment plan (all fees due up front) and would like to switch to the staggered payment deadlines of Option 2 or 3, please let us know.

If I was accepted into residence for the 2020/2021 Academic Year, but no longer need residence in Fall 2020, will I be guaranteed a spot in residence for Winter 2021?

We are hoping to be able to return to full capacity (two students per suite) for January 2021, but cannot guarantee at this time we will be able to do so.

This means we cannot guarantee that if you were offered a spot for the 2020/2021 Academic Year that we will have a spot available for you in January 2021. We will notify students as soon as the college has made a decision on our Winter 2021 capacity but expect that we won't have this information until later in the Fall term.

What happens if I'm currently on the waitlist for the 2020/2021 Academic Year?

Limiting capacity to only one student per suite means we’ll be able to accommodate fewer students than usual for the Fall 2020 term. If we receive enough cancellations through May and June that we are under 50% full, we will do another round of acceptances. We expect to be able to provide an update at the beginning of July.

When can I apply for Winter 2021 residency?

The George Residence Winter 2021 application has been delayed at this time. We continue to monitor the updates provided by the public health officials and hope to have a definitive plan of action for Winter 2021 in the upcoming months.

Thank you for your patience during this time.
