“Accelerated” Ontario Youth Apprenticeship (OYAP) Dual Credit program

  3. Residential Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic

Please note that these programs are substantially different from most Dual Credits in terms of the application process, level of commitment and class schedule. The schooling provided is the Basic Level of trade school for apprentices training and the regular stream of students have completed at least one year of paid work in the trade. Students may earn up to two secondary school credits in this program.

For further information about Accelerated OYAP programs, please see the course descriptions on the pages below and contact your School Board representative.  The programs are open to students from the following School Boards:  Toronto District School Board; Toronto Catholic District School Board; York Region District School Board; York Catholic District School Board; Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board; Peel District School Board. 

Application Process: Students who wish to take these programs must first submit an application to the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) Coordinator at their school board.  See the co-operative education teacher at your secondary school to begin the application process. Candidates chosen for consideration go through an interview/testing process with a selection committee.

Construction & Maintenance Electrician, Course Code: 309A

Campus:  Casa Loma Campus (160 Kendal Avenue, Toronto)

Length of Program:  Full time school, Monday to Friday, (240 hours, 8 weeks)
Ministry Code:  TNA4Y
Delivery: Congregated
Passing Grade:  60% on all modules

Course Description: The program is designed for students who are about to graduate and are seriously planning a career as an electrician. Courses included are "Electrical Code", "Installation Methods', "Instrumentation" and "Electronics" and there is an extensive lab/shop component to the program. Students have the opportunity to learn valuable skills that can help them find work in the industry and get a head start on an apprenticeship.

Please note that this program is substantially different from most Dual Credits in terms of the application process, level of commitment and class schedule. The schooling provided is the Basic Level of trade school for apprentices training to be licensed electricians and the regular stream of students have completed at least one year of paid work in the trade. Students may earn up to two secondary school credits in this program.

Plumber Apprentice, Course Code: 306A

Length of Program: Full time school, Monday to Friday, (240 hours, 8 weeks)

Course Description: The program is designed for students who are about to graduate and are seriously planning a career as a plumber. Courses included are "Plumbing Systems", "Tools and Piping Methods', "Trade Calculations", "Workplace Safety, Rigging and Hoisting", "Trade Documentation" and "Welding" and there is an extensive lab/shop component to the program. Students have the opportunity to learn valuable skills that can help them find work in the industry and get a head start on an apprenticeship.

Please note that this program is substantially different from most Dual Credits in terms of the application process, level of commitment and class schedule. The schooling provided is the Basic Level of trade school for apprentices training to be licensed plumbers and the regular stream of students have completed at least one year of paid work in the trade. Students may earn up to two secondary school credits in this program.

Residential Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic, Course Code: 313A

Course Description: The program is designed for students who are about to graduate and are seriously planning a career as a Residential Air Conditioning Systems Mechanics or Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic. Courses included are "Mechanical Cooling Cycle Fundamentals", "Mechanical Cooling Cycle Components", "Electrical Fundamentals", "Trade Practices", "Pipe Joining Installation and System Startup" and "Welding" and there is an extensive lab/shop component to the program. Students have the opportunity to learn valuable skills that can help them find work in the industry and get a head start on an apprenticeship.

Please note that this program is substantially different from most Dual Credits in terms of the application process, level of commitment and class schedule. The schooling provided is the Basic Level of trade school for apprentices training to be licensed Residential Air Conditioning Systems Mechanics or Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic and the regular stream of students has completed at least one year of paid work in the trade. Students may earn up to two secondary school credits in this program.
