Ventilation & Air Quality in College Buildings

George Brown College continues to monitor and upgrade ventilation systems in our buildings to help maintain healthy and safe indoor environments.

Our heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are checked regularly and are operated in accordance with American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standards.

Air Flow Rates

Rates have been measured in labs, study spaces, shared offices and other areas at Casa Loma Campus.

We continue to assess rates in all college buildings.

Portable air purification units with HEPA filters are installed in spaces across the college.

Air Filters

Air filters are maintained and changed in accordance with manufacturer guidelines or more frequently, as necessary. Air quality is enhanced with portable air purifiers with HEPA filters in spaces across the college.

HVAC Upgrades

We’re investing in significant upgrades to the HVAC systems at the St. James Campus. This includes installing a new HVAC system at 200 King St. E., which is currently underway during the Spring and Fall 2022 semesters.

The buildings at Waterfront Campus opened in 2012 and 2019 and meet current standards.

HVAC Maintenance

The facilities team performs ongoing inspections and assessments, preventative maintenance, and repairs of the air handling units in college buildings. Filters are inspected and changed frequently in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.

Portable HEPA Filter Air Purifiers

Portable HEPA filter air purifier units have been placed in numerous locations across campuses. Units are provided upon request to labs, classrooms and other shared spaces. Divisions may request a unit by emailing FacilitiesServices@georgebrown.ca.

Indoor Air Quality Testing

Indoor air quality testing has been performed at campuses to assess thermal comfort levels and ventilation efficiency.  Parameters measured include temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), and fine particulate matter (PM2.5).

Testing is ongoing.

Adjustments have been made to address thermal comfort and portable air purifiers with HEPA filters have been installed to enhance the air quality.

Washroom Ventilation

Fans in our washrooms, designed to exhaust air and provide higher air circulation, meet the recommended standards.

Fans run continuously throughout the day.
