Biography

Rushmita Alam is a dedicated Fashion educator with a solid commitment to the social and community development in the realm of Sustainability with over 18 years of fashion teaching experience at the university level. Her life began to intersect with design interests since the very early stages of the life in Japan. The Japanese culture, the customs had a huge impact on her life that later shaped her design interest, which had has further nurtured by Canadian exposure and experience later in life.

She has deep expertise in sustainability, Inclusion, and Diversity. Her background in Fashion, Inclusive Design and business is coupled with assisting businesses with the design needs of the ready-made garment industries in Bangladesh. She was also the founder and the Chair of the Fashion Design department of the first Fashion Design University of Bangladesh: BGMEA University of Fashion & technology. Her research experience includes working with the sustainable fashion industry for last 10 Years with United Nations, European Union, British Council, London College of Fashion etc.

Her current research project is on the Rana Plaza accident the 10 storied read made garments building that collapsed in Bangladesh in 2012. Through her research, she is trying to map out the question “ How Post Rana Plaza Corrective Action Plan can lead us towards a truly sustainable and inclusive Future of Fashion”. She has also spoken on Sustainability and Fashion topics at Toronto Fashion week, TFI Conferences, York University, University of Toronto, OCAD University, Simon Fraser University, London College of Fashion naming a few. Her other professional activity includes working with various international Organization such as; Society of Dyer & Colourist, International Foundation of Fashion Technology Institute, London College of fashion, Hongkong Polytechnique Institute, Hochschule Niederrhein, University of Applied Sciences etc.
