Biography
Mariola Skowron holds a Master of Science, Civil Engineering Degree from Gdansk Polytechnic University (Poland). She took postgraduate studies at the Technical University of Warsaw and she worked for 10 years in one of the biggest building companies in Gdansk. Four years after graduation she opened her own small business specializing in woman’s and children’s clothes. She came to Canada in 1994 where she started to work as a sewer/alterationist for Dream Leather Fashion in Unionville, Ontario. Later she earned a Diploma in Fashion Technology and Design program (High Honours) from George Brown College. After graduation she worked for Mikane Apparel and Forever Garment in Mississauga as a Computer System Operator. She was responsible for creating patterns, digitizing, grading and marker making for 30,000-60,000 garment per month for Adidas, Reebok, Levi’s, Fila and Puma using Gerber Software.
Mariola started working at George Brown College in 2001. She began as a Fashion Technician and moved quickly into teaching as full-time professor in Fashion. Her educational background, diverse experience in the fashion industry and love for teaching (since her father was a teacher) make her a passionate, dedicated, and enthusiastic teacher. She believes that the role of a teacher is to motivate, encourage and lead by example. Mariola has a special interest in developing a variety of artisanal fabric enhancement techniques such as: embroidery, embellishment, felting, batik and hand painting. She wants to inspire students to create original garments and develop their own unique style.
