George Brown Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce the appointment of AJ Wideman as head coach of the Huskies men’s baseball program for the 2018-19 season.

Wideman was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 11th round of the 2003 MLB Draft and played nine professional seasons with four organizations. Wideman had three stints with the Canadian National Team, including playing on the squad that qualified for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, and was named to Baseball Americas All-Independent Team in 2009 after going 10-1 with the New Jersey Jackals.

“It is an honour to be named head coach and I’m flattered by the confidence that George Brown has in me,” said Wideman. “Since my playing days ended, coaching and instructing have given me a different outlook on the game. It gives you the responsibility of mentoring and influencing young men, and I couldn’t be more excited.”

“AJ was a great addition to our staffing roster last year,” said manager of athletics Melanie Gerin-Lajoie. “His coaching background as well as professional playing experience made him a valuable asset in terms of our young player development. We’re looking forward to the continuity AJ will bring in his head coaching position as we continue to stride positively into the 2018 season.”

The Huskies program was much improved in 2017, and look to be returning most key pieces this upcoming season. With the focus on adding a couple of arms to the rotation, Huskies baseball is on the upswing.

“My goal is to make the playoffs,” said Wideman. “We made big strides last year in changing the culture around the program and it showed.  The growth that we have shown will continue with an ongoing commitment from staff and players, and I’m confident that the process will continue to move us in a positive direction."

2017-18 head coach Tom Valcke, who was recently named the head coach of Hong Kong’s national team, will remain on with the program as a consultant.

Tryouts for the men’s baseball program begin in August, if interested please contact Athletics Coordinator Deanna Oliver at doliver@georgebrown.ca.
