George Brown women’s indoor soccer did what they had to at Monday’s Regional Championship, finishing second in the four-team round-robin to secure their spot at Provincials.

The Huskies came into the day having already won two tournaments and clearly much improved, but missing key pieces Natalie Mangos and Madeleine MacDougall-Lowen. They opened the tournament with a 1-1 draw against UTM, setting the tone by controlling play against an Eagles team they knew they’d be fighting for the Championship berth.

The key to securing that spot came in George Brown’s second game, a 7-0 win over Sault. The dominant victory earned the Huskies a plus-six differential on the game, the maximum allowable at the Regional Championship. It turned out to ultimately be the difference, as the Huskies fell 1-0 in a defensive affair to Fanshawe to close the tournament but beat out fellow 1-1-1 finisher UTM thanks to winning the goal differential tie-breaker.

As she has for much of the year, Kayla Marziliano led the way offensively. The first-year Husky scored six goals on the afternoon, including five in the win over Sault. Nicole McKenzie and Effie Takes also found the back of the net for George Brown.

The Provincial Championship will take place March 22-24 at Redeemer College in Anacaster. The men’s team will look to qualify this Thursday, follow @GBC_Huskies on twitter for updates throughout.
