No. 8 HUSKIES MEN’S BASKETBALL IMPROVE TO 15-2 WITH WIN OVER VIKINGS

------------------------------------------------------

It wasn't pretty, but George Brown men's basketball improved to 15-2 on Friday night after pulling out a 72-70 win over a resilient St. Lawrence team. The win assures that the Huskies will finish no worse than second in the east, and they sit a half-game back of Seneca for first.

Leading 71-66 with just over a minute remaining, George Brown missed 3-of-4 free throws to give the Vikings a shot to win on a buzzer-beating three. Fortunately for the Huskies it rimmed out, and the home side improved to 7-1 at Casa Loma on the season.

First-year Husky Alex Petronis led the way for George Brown, finishing with a team-high 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the field and some crucial play down the stretch. Alongside Dejazmatch James, who had 12 points on nearly 50% shooting from the field, Petronis set the tone on both ends of the court.

The difference was points off turnovers, as George Brown won that battle handily, 24-7.

The women’s team missed out on an opportunity to guarantee themselves the first seed in the east, but they’ll have another chance on Wednesday night against Georgian. Now 14-2, the 85-64 loss to the Vikings marked the Huskies first home defeat of the season.

The Huskies normally dominant press was much less effective, with George Brown coming up with just eight steals; their season average is over 17. They also shot well below normal standards, going 21-for-76 from the field.

Kiyann Grimaldo, an All-Rookie team member last year, was solid at power forward. The second-year Husky went 5-for-7 to finish with 10 points and five boards, adding a steal as well in just over 22 minutes of play.

One win in the Huskies final two regular season games will assure them the division crown.

Next up George Brown men’s basketball team travels to Peterborough to visit the Fleming Knights on Sunday, February 11. Opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. follow @GBC_Huskies on twitter for updates throughout.
