HUSKIES TOM VALCKE HIRED AS HEAD COACH OF HONG KONG’S NATIONAL BASEBALL TEAM

The Hong Kong Baseball Association has announced the hiring of George Brown Huskies men’s baseball head coach Tom Valcke to coach their men’s national team.

“Tom has been a great addition to our Huskies baseball program since joining us at the helm last winter,” said Huskies manager of athletics Melanie Gerin-Lajoie. " He has infused a new sense of culture, winning attitude and strength of character into our athletes. I have no doubt he will bring that same approach to this new challenge."

Valcke played an important role for a rapidly improving Huskies baseball program that made strides in 2017 and will return much of the same core in 2018. His contract with Hong Kong Baseball runs through the 2018 Asian Cup, which is set to take place in September.

“After that, we’ll assess our progress and our results, and we’ll decide to either move forward or change directions,” said the head coach of George Brown College and CBC Radio Canada and TV baseball analyst. Valcke is also a director with the newly opened Pinnacle Fieldhouse Training Academy, and runs the International Canadian Academy of Sports Excellence (iCASE).

Valcke worked for the Commissioner’s Office of Major League Baseball as a Scouting Supervisor when he established the Central Scouting Bureau in Canada.  He also spent time covering the San Joaquin Valley in California and Las Vegas.  A six-time national champion as a player and coach, Valcke was Baseball Canada’s Executive Director as well as a Team Canada coach. A Master Course Conductor with Canada’s National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), Valcke has been involved in the globalization of the game, having taught in 22 different countries.

“Tom's work with our program over the last year has set a great foundation going into the off-season,” added Gerin-Lajoie. While he is on leave for this exciting opportunity, we will be bringing in an interim head coach who can keep us on pace with the development plan Tom and his crew have established for the team."
