Filipe Vilela was recognized for an incredible 2017 campaign at Wednesday night's OCAA Soccer Awards Banquet.

Huskies striker Filipe Vilela was recognized for a dominant 2017 season at the annual OCAA Soccer Awards Banquet on Wednesday night in Peterborough. The 6’2” first-year striker was named League Scoring Champion, Overall Rookie of the Year, Central Division Rookie of the Year, Central Division Scoring Champion and OCAA All-Star – an incredible list of accomplishments, particularly for a freshman.

“To have a centre-forward who can score the ball essentially at will definitely takes a lot of pressure off of our other guys,” said head coach John Williams. “Filipe has been exactly what we bargained for when we heard he was coming in, and my expectation is that he will exceed those expectations this weekend.”

Vilela arrived at George Brown after having played in Portugal for eight years, and as a highly touted League1 Ontario player who had won both a title and scoring championship. He quickly showed just how dominant he could be in the OCAA, scoring in three of his first four games for an overpowering Huskies attack. He scored three goals in one game on back-to-back occasions against Conestoga and Cambrian, and was arguably Ontario’s most feared striker.

The Toronto native finished his season with ten goals in just eight games, for an average of 1.25 per game.

Vilela was also named an OCAA All-Star on Wednesday night along with three of his teammates, and he will now turn his attention to the Niagara Knights, who the Huskies will face on Thursday afternoon to open the OCAA Championship.

“For us, the key is to stay tight as a group and we’re going to be just fine,” added Williams. “Everyone knows what the expectations are, and I fully expect us to be playing in a big game come Saturday."
