George Brown men’s soccer (7-3-1, 2nd central) will open the 2017 OCAA Soccer Championship on Thursday afternoon against the Niagara Knights (7-2-2, 2nd west).

The Huskies qualified for the Championship via a 7-0 crossover win over Redeemer, a victory that saw George Brown’s goal differential pushed to 36-12 on the season. The win also assured the program a second consecutive appearance at provincials; at the 2016 Championship, they defeated Niagara 4-3 to assure themselves the bronze medal.

Four Huskies finished among the OCAA’s top ten in goals scored – star rook Filipe Vilela and Osman Hussein, both of whom found the back of the net against Redeemer, fifth-year captain Jesse Oliver, and defenceman Ozzy Keles. George Brown boasted one of the most balanced attacks in Ontario, ranking first in shots on goal, third in goals scored and sixth in corner kicks.

It has been an incredibly successful two-year stretch for the program, as the Huskies have gone 15-8-2 since the 2016-17 campaign kicked off, establishing themselves among the provinces elite. They look to be serious contenders going into the week, and the OCAA holds two National Championship births, meaning a gold medal game appearance would assure the Huskies a spot in Nanaimo, BC.

Niagara heads into Thursday having qualified thanks to a 3-0 shutout of UTM, and they have won two straight. The winner of the quarter-final matchup will take on the winner of Durham-Fanshawe in the semi-final.
