George Brown badminton kicks the 2017/18 season off on Friday at the Humber Invitational, looking to carry the momentum from an excellent 2016/17 campaign.

Last year saw the Huskies win a pair of medals at the provincial championship, including a silver in men’s doubles and a bronze in mixed doubles. Two of the four medal winners return for another run, including reigning female athlete of the year Angeline Alviar and Alex Chao.

Will Schram heads into his second season at the helm of one of George Brown’s most storied programs and is looking to continue building on an impressive debut. Schram is a former top-four singles player in Canada, a provincial singles champion, and member of the Canada Winter Games and Ontario Winter Games teams.

“Conditioning has been a focal point for me since I took over, and the training that’s been implemented will help us continually improve,” said Schram. “Last year we brought in (former English national team member) Nathan Robertson and had a great level of intensity at practices throughout the year. I really feel as though we are heading in the right direction.”

George Brown boasted three academic all-stars last season in Ivan Chan, Yunji Kim and Jin Yub Ya. Chao, Kim and Yunji Kim were also named to the OCAA all-star team, for a second consecutive time in Kim’s case. The Lome native is heading into her fifth and final year of eligibility, and after such an incredible run will surely be looking to go out with a bang.
