GEORGE BROWN ATHLETICS SET TO CELEBRATE 50TH ANNIVERSARY AT 2017 ATHLETICS HOMECOMING

This year marks George Brown Athletics’ 50th Anniversary, a time to catch up with old friends, teammates and relive great memories over 50 years of Huskies sport.

From a 1970’s basketball run that included a national title and seven provincial championships, to cross country’s 27 total OCAA medals and the badminton program picking up eight Ontario titles and 21 medals since 2000, George Brown Athletics programs have a long and storied history. Individual performances such as Marv Snowden’s 87 point game while leading the basketball league in scoring (’73-’74), alpine skiing’s Marla Henderson winning 6 gold medals in two seasons of competition (’06-07’, 07’-08’), and Ed Yee’s nod to the OCAA Badminton All-Millennium Team are only a few examples of stellar student-athletes who have provided a solid foundation for our current Huskies to be inspired by.

“There is a lot of history here inside these walls at George Brown that people don’t really know about. It’s being able to host large scale homecoming events like these every five years that really gives a platform and opportunity to keep sharing that history and culture with the current student base, both athlete and non-athlete,” said manager of athletics Melanie Gerin-Lajoie.

The 50th Athletics Homecoming weekend will be taking place on September 29-30th, 2017 and is the staple event in a series of 50th athletics anniversary celebrations scheduled to take place over the season, including heritage game nights, exclusive apparel sales, and launch of a new student-athlete scholarship endowment.

The weekend’s events will include a gala dinner with hall of fame inductions, recreational and competitive varsity games, and a special edition of #GBConnect with great guest speakers from the Toronto sports industry including gold medal Olympian Tessa Bonhomme and Vice President & General Manager of NBA Canada Dan Mackenzie.
