Workshops

Workshop #1: Halim Amini - "Advocating for Culturally & Linguistically Competent Mental Health Programs - the Experience of Immigrant/Refugee Communities"

This workshop will discuss the challenges in meeting the mental health needs of immigrant and refugee communities. It will explore ways to get agencies and organizations to become more responsive, such as involving the family when necessary and using more holistic approaches.

Workshop #2: Latha Sukumar - "Law, Ethics and Cultural Responsiveness"

Increasing consumer survivors' self-determination so that they can advocate more effectively, at both the "micro" and "macro" level for culturally sensitive, ethical and legal service delivery will be examined.


Workshop #3: Dr. Ted Lo - "Traditional Healing for Mental Health"

This highly interactive, experiential workshop will explore various traditional healing methods, including the use of herbs, shamanic practices and Qigong. Evidence for their efficacy in the treatment of mental health disorders and the implications for holistic mental health practice will be discussed.


Workshop #4: Wanda Marsman - "Strategies for Employability"

Barriers to successful integration and employment and the impact this has on the individual and family will be discussed. Intervention solutions focused on ideas, programs and projects that highlight international perspectives, experiences and skills will be covered.

Workshop #5: Aamna Ashraf - "Resettlement Stress"

Resettlement stress places immigrants and refugees at higher risk for mental illness. This workshop will focus on the need for early identification of those at risk (types of stress/other risk factors) and positive and effective intervention strategies.

Workshop #6: Ann Pottinger & Rani Srivastava - "Clinical Cultural Competence: Understanding Through Culture"

Differentiating between illness and culture can be challenging. This workshop will focus on understanding mental illness through cultural exploration. Implications for current assessment tools and intervention strategies to provide effective mental health care will also be discussed.

Workshop #7: Jasmine Artis - "Dialogue with Employers"

This workshop will examine myths and realities of hiring an individual with a mental health disorder. Identification of employer needs for managing employees with mental health problems will also be discussed. All participants receive a package for networking, accommodation needs and resource purposes.
