Architectural expertise

Young Centre for the Performing Arts

Tom Payne is in the architectural spotlight with his dramatic design vision for Toronto's newest and most innovative cultural facility, The Young Centre for the Performing Art in Toronto's Distillery Historic District.

Payne, who co-founded Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects (KPMB) in 1987, has designed many award winning and landmark structures for the performing arts sector.
A personal commitment to the performing arts has inspired Payne to develop professional expertise in balancing technical requirements with the design of acoustically and visually superior performance projects. These include the Stratford Festival Theatre Expansion, the Roy Thomson Hall Enhancement, the Goodman Theatre in Chicago and Sprague Memorial Hall for Yale University.

Payne's work has garnered numerous awards including the Governor General's Awards for Excellence in Architecture for the Joseph S. Stauffer Library at Queen's University in Kingston and Woodsworth College at the University of Toronto, a United States Institute for Theatre Technology Architecture Award for Sprague Memorial Hall, and the 2004 Canadian Interiors Best of Canada Award for the Lexus Lounge in Roy Thomson Hall.

In total, KPMB projects have received more than 70 awards recognizing design excellence, including nine Governor General's Awards for Architecture - Canada's most prestigious architecture award, and was named 2005 Firm of the Year Award by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

KPMB has repeatedly devoted itself to creating architecture that supports the urban condition as well as to the design of spatial programs and interior space that respond to the functional needs and long term objectives of clients and users. In addition to the Young Centre project, KPMB's contribution to the architecture of Toronto includes the Telus Centre for Performance and Learning for the Royal Conservatory of Music, the Celia Franca Dance Training Centre for the National Ballet School, the Gardiner Museum for Ceramic Art, and Festival Centre for the Toronto International Film Festival Group.
