George Brown Theatre School Background

Preparing the actors of tomorrow

Established in 1976, the George Brown Theatre Arts program has grown from modest beginnings to a leading role in enriching the Canadian arts and culture landscape for nearly 30 years. Today, it is considered to be one of the most highly respected theatre programs in the country.

The George Brown Theatre School offers vigorously concentrated, career-oriented actor training in the fundamental skills, theories and professionalism required for success in the highly-competitive theatre, film and television fields. Every year, the George Brown Theatre School receives more than 700 applications for 32 coveted spots in our first-year class. Applicants come from across Canada, many with university degrees already in hand. The reason students come to the George Brown Theatre School is simple; we offer the best conservatory training available, providing the finest training and skills required by a working actor.

Faculty in the George Brown Theatre School are experienced working professionals who bring specific expertise in a range of areas including acting, music, movement, speech, improvisation, stage combat, dance, clowning and voice. In addition, guest artists and partnerships with some of the city's most acclaimed theatre companies provide students with the best training possible.

The practical, hands-on training prepares graduates to work in all areas of the entertainment industry including theatre, film, television, radio and commercials. The curriculum includes acting, speech, voice, movement, dance, music, stage combat, theatre history, improvisation, clown performance, television and film, make-up, mask and the business of acting.

In addition to the full range of theatrical disciplines, graduating students participate in five annual full-scale public productions ranging from the classics to contemporary drama and one play specifically for young audiences.

Graduates of the George Brown Theatre School are found on the stages of the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, Canadian Stage, Tarragon, Soulpepper, Theatre Passe Muraille and at major regional theatres across Canada, as well as on film and television sets across North America.
