George Brown College hosts PEN Canada writer-in-exile for an intimate reading prior to performance of Blood Wedding by Federico García Lorca

Saturday, April 19, 2008

On Saturday, April 19th, the George Brown Theatre program hosted poet and PEN Canada writer-in-exile, Emma Beltrán for a pre-performance reading. This special event was co-hosted by Maurizio Dodaro, George Brown Professor of Humanities, and Todd Hammond, Head of Acting, George Brown Theatre and Director, Blood Wedding. Caitlin Smith from PEN Canada was on hand to provide the audience with a brief synopsis of the important work PEN Canada does and to introduce Emma. Nearly 60 people attended this presentation which was followed by the final George Brown theatre performance of Blood Wedding, written by Federico García Lorca.

Federico García Lorca is possibly the most important Spanish poet and dramatist of the twentieth century. In 1936, Lorca was led into a field by Franco’s army and shot. His body has never been found. He was 38. “Lorca was envied for his talent, he had money and he was successful. When the military took power, his execution was only a matter of time. A successful, liberal homosexual could not be tolerated in Franco’s Spain,” says Ian Gibson, Lorca’s biographer and an expert on modern Spanish history.

Emma Beltrán is a poet from Mexico. She has been involved in the struggle of indigenous peoples facilitating poetry and popular theatre workshops for women and children. She is the founding member of the first community radio station in Mexico. In 2001, Emma Beltrán was kidnapped in Mexico City by the Mexican National Army and tortured for 7 days. She was 22.

A graduate of George Brown Theatre School, he brings with him a wealth of experience with theatre performance and a keen interest in play development. Thanks to the generous support of the Metcalf Foundation, Keith will be helping Artistic Director Yvette Nolan launch us into the next 25 brilliant years.
