Toronto Creates Young From Old Digs
Young Centre for the Performing Arts Receives Wide Critical Acclaim
by Richard Ouzounian

A new theatre for a major repertory company is a thrilling enough prospect, but combine it with a high – tech home for a theatre school in a restored historical building and it’s easy to see why this city is getting so excited about it. The Young Centre for the Performing Arts officially opened to the public on January 15, and the 44,000 – square – foot facility is drawing raves from architecture and theatre critics alike. The Globe and Mail called it "the vital spark that every city desires," while the Toronto Star praised it as a "masterpiece of comfort, flexibility and beauty". The two driving forces behind the project are the Soulpepper Theatre Company and the George Brown Theatre School.

George Brown Theatre School has been in operation for 30 years, with a total enrollment of about 100 students. It has a solid reputation for equipping young actors to join the professional world. Its Artistic Director, James Simon, was seeking a permanent home, and, teaming with Albert Schultz, Artistic Director of the Soulpepper Theatre Company, presented a proposal for a structure that would combine a professional theatre with an educational facility in a format that is unique in the world.

The Young Centre was designed by Tom Payne of Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects, who respected the integrity of the original structure whole managing to install all the design, workshop, rehearsal and classroom space the organizations needed, as well as eight distinct performance spaces with capacities ranging from 50 to 400.

SCENES
The Envelope, Please! Monday (June 27) is party night for Toronto theatre, opera and dance companies as they celebrate the Dora Mayor Moore awards. The 26th annual Dora's kick off with the awards presentation at the Winter Garden Theatre, hosted by Rick Roberts and Melanie Johnson, and followed by a party in the theatre lobby. Here an unusual example of Stratford actors working Toronto. Drumroll thunder pause theatre is composed of former Stratford child actors who want to make a mark in local theatre. Some of them - Eli Ham, Robin Michael and Michael Taylor - are recent George Brown Theatre Grads, while executive producer Dan Leberg has directed at Hart House and The U of T Drama Festival.

Theatre School students steal the show

Act 1, Scene 1 had all the makings of a Broadway hit.

The red carpet leading up to the Fermenting Cellar at the Distillery Historic District, the elegantly decorated dining room complete with stunning chandeliers hanging from wood beams, a beautiful grand piano by the bar, and displays of elaborate theatrical costumes set the stage for the Theatre School's highly successful gala.

Going back to school is often accompanied by whining, complaining, and reluctance, if not blatant resistance.

But for George Brown Theatre School students, the first day of school was filled with cheering, laughter and unabashed jubilance as they explored their new theatre school in the Distillery Historic District.

"I'm more excited than you could ever imagine," gushed third-year student Jennifer Harding. "It's been a long time coming."
