Are you teaching the quietly queer? In many research studies, lesbian, gay, trans and bisexual students report that they experience their classrooms as larger closets: they feel afraid to speak out because their communities and life experiences aren’t represented in their texts, curricula and classroom discussions. Without knowing it, teachers may perpetuate the invisibility of queer students and perspectives. How can we make our classrooms a safe enough place for our students to be out? This 2 hour participatory session offers a basic guide on how to make your classroom, curricula and teaching inclusive of sexual diversity. We discuss strategies for including lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans perspectives, creating safe and comfortable classroom environments that are more conducive to everyone’s learning. Participants leave with clear guidelines to reduce heterosexism, concrete strategies for incorporating sexual diversity into curricula, as well as a list of useful resources available at GBC.
