NEW GEORGE BROWN STAFF IDENTIFICATION CARDS

The Educational Resources Department is happy to report that a new George Brown identification card will be issued to all full-time staff (and eventually to part-time staff, as well).

The new Staff Card is designed to meet the security needs of employees, as well as help protect college property. The Card will also facilitate more efficiency in various transactions, eliminating the need to use personal ID when accessing GBC services.

The implementation of a Staff Card is in response to multiple requests over the years by college employees for an ID card. Last year, Management Committee authorized the Educational Resources Department to proceed with a Staff Card project, initially for full-time staff.

MULTI-FUNCTIONALITY

The new Card (unlike those in the past) will serve multiple functions. Specifically, the card will be used to access the college after hours, and it will serve as a library card for staff, as well. Many possible uses exist and as they are identified they will be added to the card over time.

PRIVACY PROTECTED

A key benefit of the GBC Staff Card is privacy of information. The new card will allow staff to identify themselves as employees of GBC, and to access those services available to them, without having to use other forms of identification, which can open the possibility of sharing personal information.

The only information that will appear on the new Staff Card will be the person's first and last names, and a photograph. No other personal information or personal identifiers will be visible on the card.

Other information (stored in a dedicated database and accessible by a "reader" through a pre-printed barcode and barcode number on the back of the Card) will be very limited in scope. An employee's photo, name, department, division and campus, along with the person's supervisor's name, and employment status (e.g. active, on leave, etc.) will be viewable by Campus Security. Flexibility will also permit the recording of other secondary campus locations the employee has access to after hours.
