our mission Counselling & Career Coaching What is Online Learning? Welcome to Online Learning. Sooner or later, most of us will be presented with an opportunity to take an online course. Online learning, sometimes also referred to as distance learning, is a virtual class where the teacher and the students are in different physical locations. They may be separated by country lines or simply campus locations. It is a unique way to learn with people who may be in very different physical locations. Students and professionals alike have used online learning to enhance their learning experience and gain more flexibility in their learning schedule. Online learning provides individuals with an opportunity to schedule their own study time. For instance, a busy individual with a full time job can study in the evening or weekends. Someone with young children can study while the children take an afternoon nap. It also gives people the option to study in their chosen environment, whether it be in the library or on the dinning room table. Online learning can be for everyone. Online learning
requires access to technology including the phone, computer and the
Internet. Anyone can be successful at online learning so long as they
are willing to make certain adjustments. Since everyone learns differently,
be sure to see the section on Learning Styles in
order to better understand your own learning style. Why choose online learning? Online learning offers flexibility and
convenience. It gives you a chance to be independent and the ability
to set your own
studying schedule. You can study at home in your pajamas and save the
time and cost of commuting. It provides control over your day-to-day
schedule. It utilizes technology and provides one-on-one feedback from
your professor. It also gives you a chance to get to know people from
different physical locations. Online learning provides students with
direct and personal feedback. Online learning gives busy people a chance
to enhance their skills without being
committed to given time every week.
Learning Style
Preferences
We need to study smarter not longer or
harder. That means creating a tool box of strategies. When you hit a "wall" you
then need to be looking for the right strategy rather than becoming frustrated
and giving
up. Everyone learns differently and has different strengths and weaknesses.
Knowing your particular Strengths can help you make the most out of you time
and effort. It is important to remember that we utilize all three modalities. Knowing our area(s) of greatest strength gives us a starting point. For example, if you have a visual preference, try to begin by reading material or instructions; find a picture, diagram or chart. You will then be more successful in listening/discussing (auditory) and applying (kinesthetic) new learning. Do you know your learning style? Assess your learning style. It will help you explore which strategies work best for you. The information presented here is meant to be used as a general introduction to online learning. The requirements for your particular course maybe different from those that are presented here. Please be sure to check with your particular program before starting any online learning course. You may also need to meet prerequisite requirements before enrolling in your course. What is online learning? | Why
