Landlord and Tenant Act
Landlord and Tenant Information
Since accommodations are not inspected, the quality cannot be estimated or guaranteed. Therefore, it is very important for you to meet with landlord
and inspect the accommodation before entering into an agreement.
First and Last Months' Rent
Whether you are arranging shared or private accommodation; once you have made a written or verbal agreement be prepared
to pay the landlord one month's rent. This will be your last month's rent. When you move into your accommodation, you will be required to pay your
first month's rent.
Utilities
Most postings will specify whether or not utilities are included. Utility charges are usually for electricity heating, and sometimes
water. If you must share expenses for utilities, you can expect to pay an additional 10% on top of the rent. This is something you should discuss
with your landlord before entering into a rental agreement.
Transportation
If your accommodation is not within walking or bicycling distance from the college, you should budget for public transportation
costs.
The Student Association offers a discounted Metro pass which allows unlimited use of the Toronto Transit Commission System (TTC). The
cost for one month is $107 and exact fare is $3.00.
An adult weekly pass to the Mississauga Transit System (MTS) costs $24.50 with
proper G.B.C. identification. Cash fare is $3.00.
Parking is available at Casa Loma, St. James and Ryerson and costs between $6-$12 .
Temporary Accommodation
If you have friends or family in Toronto, you should arrange to stay with them while you search for your longer-term accommodation.
If this is not an option for you, your Housing Service can supply a list of guest houses, hotels and Bed & Breakfasts, located within 30 minutes
of the college. The cost for a room starts at $55 per night and may include a full breakfast. You should reserve your temporary accommodations
as soon as you know the dates you will be in Toronto. You are more likely to make an arrangement that will suit you throughout the year if you
have comfortable accommodation while searching for your permanent home.
