What does the Learning Strategist (LS) do?

Learning Strategist (LS): is a trained counsellor and learning disabilities specialist, who can assist you in the following areas:

  1. Understand your Psychological report. The LS will meet with you and explain your report in easy-to-understand language. This will help you understand what your learning disability is all about, and help you understand why you require certain accommodations in classes and for tests.

  2. Help you develop higher-level thinking skills. This can mean getting assistance with: time management, organizational skills, problem solving, memory, and planning and editing your essays. These skills can also be helpful in other aspects of your personal life. These are known as your metacognitive skills.

  3. Help you with improving: reading comprehension, writing, spelling, note-taking, study skills, test-taking skills, and researching.

The work that you do with the LS is NOT additional schoolwork!! You will bring in your own schoolwork, and you and the LS will work together to help you get your work done more efficiently.

The LS is available to meet with you between 8:30 am - 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. Please contact your Disability Consultant to set up an appointment.

What does the Adaptive Technologist (AT) do?

Adaptive Educational Technologist (AT): provides one-on-one demonstrations and training sessions for students with learning disabilities using the following technologies:

  1. Kurzweil 3000: This is a text-to-voice program. This application allows you to view a scanned page on the computer screen while listening to the text being read aloud. Kurzweil 3000 also assists you with reading comprehension, vocabulary development, writing, spelling, editing and study skills.
  2. Dragon Naturally Speaking: This program allows you talk to your computer via a microphone, instead of using a keyboarding. As you speak, your words are transcribed onto the computer screen. It helps in writing papers, doing spreadsheets, and for sending e-mail messages. It also has a read-back option.
  3. Inspiration: This program is used to develop your ideas and to organize your thinking. It has integrated diagramming and outlining options to help you better visualize and comprehend information.
  4. TextHelp: This is a supportive software program to help you with reading and writing difficulties. It can read text out loud and help you construct words and sentences by using word prediction. For instance, if you type in "peo", it will offer you "people" as a word choice. This program also has a talking spell checker specifically designed for people with learning difficulties and a built-in screen reader. It comes with a thesaurus and a word wizard for times when you are lost for words.
