Co-ops, externships, internships, field education and practicums – all of these ultimately mean one thing: gaining valuable work experience as part of your program. Many of our programs include some form of work or field placement such as full-time, paid co-op terms, short-term projects with industry, and even international opportunities. The bottom line is that many employers look for 'real experience' and work placements give you exactly that.
FROM THE REAL WORLD TO THE CLASSROOM.
In addition to work or fi eld placements, many programs offer the opportunity
to work on industry-led projects that are graded by actual employers. This type
of hands-on learning is also enhanced by facilities and labs modeled after real
workplaces and state-of-the-art technology such as:
The Simulated Practice Centre, where students across Health Sciences programs learn in a simulated hospital setting with high fidelity mannequins as patients.
Our School of Design, which is set up to mirror the real world agency and studio environments that many of our graduates find employment in.
The newly renovated ASL Lab allows students to practice sign language interpretation with specially designed computer hardware and software.
Our Centre for Construction& Engineering Technologies, which features a number of workplace-modeled labs with industry standard equipment, from Tool and Die workshops to a Computer Networking lab.
PRACTICE BY DOING THE ACTUAL JOB.
There’s no replacement for real world practice, and certain programs allow students to not only gain experience but to work alongside senior professionals at the same time through our many public labs, services, and workshops – all of which are open to paying customers. These include:
The Chefs' House restaurant, where students prepare and serve the latest in culinary trends.
The Young Centre for the Performing Arts in the Distillery Historic District featuring top notch student theatre productions.
The School of Early Childhood operates nine child care centres throughout Toronto that give our students real world experience.
The Interprofessional Learning Clinic, which allows students to hone their skills by providing clients with services such as teeth cleaning, fitness and hearing tests.
Two student-run clothing stores, City Uptown and City Downtown, where students stock and sell merchandise at bargain prices.
The Institute of Entrepreneurship and Community Innovation, where teams of students work as consultants for real companies, executing business projects in the community.
