2005 - 2006 Theatre School Season

TORONTO, July 2005

James Simon, Artistic Director
James Simon is a director and acting instructor. He holds an M.A. from the University of Alberta, B.A. from McGill University, and has studied at the Banff Centre. As an instructor, Mr. Simon has taught at the University of Alberta, Grant MacEwan Community College (Edmonton), Theatre Ontario, and the Citadel Theatre. Directing credits include productions at the National Arts Centre; the Citadel Theatre; Tarragon Theatre; Young People's Theatre; Blyth Festival; Buddies in Bad Times (Dora nomination); Stage West; Theatre Network; Carousel Players; Theatre on the Move; University of Alberta - Department of Drama; and George Brown Theatre. Mr. Simon has been on the teaching staff for ten years, and been Artistic Director of the programme for five years.

George Brown Theatre School's second year class brings to life a series of the humorous and delightful stories by renowned Canadian children's author Robert Munsch. This annual holiday production is suited for audiences of all ages.

The School for Scandal by Richard Brinsley Sheridan
Directed by Miles Potter
The Young Centre for the Performing Arts, The Distillery, 55 Mill Street

Hailed as the best comedy of manners in English and one of the most produced of all theatre classics, The School for Scandal mocks the mannerisms and pretentiousness of aristocratic Londoners of the 1770s.

Big Love by Charles Mee
Director: Daryl Cloran
Big Love is a commentary on gender issues, societal pressures and commercialism. A modern update of Aeschylus' The Suppliant Women, it tells the story of 50 young Greek women who are forced against their will to marry their cousins and agree to slay their husbands on their wedding night. All but one carries out her promise.

Hot L Baltimore by Lanford Wilson
Directed by Todd Hammond

Winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle Award in 1973, Hot L Baltimore brings together an assortment of residents in the lobby of an abandoned hotel marked for demolition who share the personal stories of people, places and life in that hotel.
