GEORGE BROWN THEATRE SCHOOL ENDS 2007/2008 SEASON WITH CLASSIC TRAGEDY AND CONTEMPORARY PHENOMENON

TORONTO (March 12, 2008) – George Brown Theatre’s Spring Repertory Season brings together a classic tragedy and a contemporary phenomenon as the graduating students perform for the last time before entering the professional entertainment industry.

Head of Acting Todd Hammond directs BLOOD WEDDING, Federico García Lorca’s best know play.  Inspired by a newspaper account of a young bride in Andalusia who abandoned her husband-to-be on their wedding day and escaped with her childhood sweetheart, Lorca evokes the spectacle of human passion through sophisticated and often surrealistic poetic technique, elevating a love story to a tragedy of fate.

Playing in repertory with BLOOD WEDDING is John Guare’s seminal work SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION, directed by Jordan Pettle.  Also inspired by a true story, this prize-winning play follows the trail of a young con-man who convinces wealthy New York couples that he is the son of actor Sidney Portier.  In piecing together the connections that gave him access to their lives, they discover the theory that any two people in the world can be connected through only six people. Winner of the 1993 Olivier Award for Best Play and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION was also a popular, Oscar-nominated film starring Stockard Channing and Will Smith.

Director Jordan Pettle has worked as an actor at theatres across the country including Soulpepper (Waiting For Godot, The Long Valley, She Stoops To Conquer); Factory Theatre (Essay/The Russian Play, Zadie's Shoes, Tiger of Malaya); Tarragon (Generous, Goodness); Theatre Passe Muraille (Three Squares a Day, Small Returns); and Canadian Stage (Sunday Father, Written on Water, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Romeo and Juliet, Taming of the Shrew, Twelfth Night).  Pettle also appeared for four seasons at the Stratford Festival (King Lear, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Cherry Orchard) and his directing credits include: Therac 25 (Factory Theatre); Terminating (SummerWorks Festival); and Escape From Grace (Ryerson Theatre School).
