About the Institute without Boundaries
The Institute without Boundaries (IwB) was founded in 2003 by the School
of Design at George Brown College in consultation with the Bruce Mau
Design Studio. It is a unique academic, research and development program focused on interdisciplinary, collaborative design practice with
the objectives of social, ecological and economic innovation through design research and strategy. Central to this work are real projects of public
and global significance that are executed by students, faculty and industry experts.
Massive Change: The Future of Global Design, was the Institute's first project, led by Bruce Mau Design, which sparked a discourse on
the potential of design to leverage positive change for the future. In 2006, the Institute entered its second phase with the World House Project,
confronting the issue of shelter for coming generations by developing housing systems that operate on the principles of sustainability, universality,
technological responsiveness and ecological balance. In September 2009, IwB embarks on a new project, City Systems, to explore,
dissect and re-imagine the complexities of urban life.
