Toronto, ON… Distinguished George Brown patrons and guests enjoyed spectacular hospitality and exciting performances on Saturday, November 26 as they celebrated the George Brown Theatre School Opening Gala and raised over $100,000 towards the Theatre School's production fund.

The Gala event, appropriately titled, Act 1, Scene 1, was held in the Stone Distillery Fermenting Cellar in the Distillery District, around the corner from the Theatre School's new home, the Young Centre for the Performing Arts.

The evening featured exceptional headliner acts from Theatre School students, including scenes from Jane Eyre, The Taming of the Shrew which featured a thrilling fencing demonstration, and a musical number from the Stephen Sondheim hit Follies.
"Tonight represents a milestone for George Brown College and, in particular, for the Theatre School," said David Tsubouchi, Chair of the Theatre School's Fundraising Cabinet. "We celebrate the Theatre School's move to the Young Centre for the Performing Arts, and the beginning of a new phase of excellence in theatrical training for students across the country."

Gala co-chair and President of Kearns Capital, Helen Kearns, said she was proud to co-host the Act 1, Scene 1 Gala and to "salute the wealth of talent the school fosters and encourages."

Steve Hudson, Chairman of the Gala's presenting sponsor, Cameron Capital Equity, and co-chair of the event, highlighted the generosity of the major supporters, including top sponsors Teranet and Scotiabank, as well as gracious sponsors Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP, Edgestone Capital Markets, Ernst & Young, Legacy Private Trust and RBC Capital Markets.

"Your generosity towards George Brown Theatre School secures the future of one of Canada's leading actor training facilities, and it is also an investment in the careers of the stars of tomorrow," said Hudson, acknowledging the sponsors in attendance.

"We are proud to host the Act 1, Scene 1 Gala celebrating the new home of the George Brown Theatre School. Gala proceeds will support the Theatre Production Fund, which underwrites the school's five annual productions directed by Canada's finest theatre professionals. It is gratifying to know that the next generation of Canadian stars will now be studying, performing and training in such an outstanding facility as the Young Centre," he said.

"Tonight, we take another step to show just how truly involved we are in all facets of life in this vibrant city as we expand into Toronto's favourite arts destination, the Distillery District," said George Brown College President, Anne Sado. "As the latest venue addition to the George Brown College family, the state-of-the-art Young Centre for the Performing Arts proudly takes its place in the college community," she said.

Other guests at the Gala included Tarragon Artistic Director Richard Rose, Stratford Executive Director, Antoni Cimolino, Stratford Producer Peter Roberts, accomplished actor Brent Carver and philanthropists Nona and William Heaslip.

The Young Centre for the Performing Arts will officially open in mid-January.
