George Brown College Chef School produces another winner as grad wins awards at prestigious culinary skills competition

Waterloo, Ontario, native takes gold in the provincial competition and silver in the national cook-off for post-secondary students

Trevor RitchieToronto, ON (June 25, 2007) — Trevor Ritchie, a Waterloo, Ontario, native and recent graduate of George Brown’s renowned Chef School, has won two cooking medals in the post-secondary division at the 2007 Canada skills competition in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. With a gold medal win at the provincial level, Ritchie gained entry into the national competition and placed in second among some of the best culinary arts students in the country.

“The Canadian Skills competition provided a great opportunity for me to hone my skills as I move into the workplace,” said Trevor, who received his diploma in culinary management from George Brown College earlier in the month. “My instructors at George Brown were great mentors and they provided tremendous support by allowing me to use the school’s facilities during my training for the competition.”

Skills Canada is a national, not-for-profit organization that actively promotes careers in skilled trades and technologies to Canadian Youth. Provincial and territorial branches of Skills Canada hold annual Olympic-style competitions to test the skills of young people at secondary and post-secondary levels of trade and technology occupations. Gold medalists from each province or territory then go on to compete in the national competition. The secondary and post-secondary events took place in early June.

This summer, Ritchie will begin his full-time job working under executive chef James Olberg at the Queen’s Landing Inn and Conference Resort in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Ritchie and Chef Olberg are also working together in preparation for the Canadian Bocuse d’or qualifiers in 2008. The Bocuse d’or, founded by legendary French chef Paul Bocuse, is the most prestigious cooking competition in the world.
