GEORGE BROWN THEATRE SCHOOL TO WRAP UP 2006-2007 SEASON WITH THE COUNTRY WIFE and THE GUT GIRLS Toronto, ON (March 19, 2007) — The George Brown Theatre School, located at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts, in the Distillery District, concludes its 2006-2007 season with The Country Wife and The Gut Girls running in repertory from April 10 to 21, 2007. After the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 and the reopening of London’s theatres, audiences were treated to some of the most bawdy and riotous comedy ever written. The most famous play of that era was William Wycherley's The Country Wife. Written in 1675, the play is a rich tapestry of clever dialogue, sexual puns and hilarious plot twists, as a notorious playboy pretends to be a eunuch in order to bed married women. The Country Wife is directed by Michael Shamata, former Artistic Director of Theatre New Brunswick and The Grand Theatre in London. Running in repertory with The Country Wife is Sarah Daniels' The Gut Girls. First performed in London in 1988, the play centres on the women who worked in London's slaughter houses at the turn of the 20th century. They are a rowdy, boisterous group who spend their days knee-deep in animal entrails but relish their financial independence – rare for young working class women in the Victoria era. When the aristocratic Lady Helena embarks on a mission to teach the gut girls manners and get them employed as domestics, their spirited independence suffers a fatal blow. The Gut Girls is directed by Todd Hammond, Head of Acting at George Brown Theatre School. WHAT:
