George Brown College President Anne Sado receives honorary doctorate from the University of Toronto
TORONTO (June 15, 2011) – George Brown College is proud to announce that its president, Anne Sado, today received an honorary doctorate of laws from the University of Toronto (UofT) during the university’s spring convocation ceremony.
Sado, a double-alumna of the U of T, graduated in engineering in 1977 and then from the Rotman School of Management in 1981. She received the honorary doctorate for serving as a role model to women in engineering and business across Ontario and Canada; for long-term success in her career; and, for her community involvement.
“It is a tremendous honour to receive this degree from my alma mater,” said Sado. “My studies at the University of Toronto helped to prepare me for the many challenges I have faced throughout my career and instilled within me an unwavering appreciation for higher learning.”
The U of T awards honorary doctorates to individuals with extraordinary achievements in public service and philanthropy and who have made significant contributions in these fields.
Since joining George Brown College in 2004, Sado has played an instrumental role in the expansion of the school and the intensification of its involvement in the socioeconomic welfare of Toronto. She has guided the school toward the establishment of a new, interdisciplinary campus along Toronto’s waterfront and the College’s occupancy of two new buildings near the school’s St. James campus.
In addition, she has dedicated much of her time to providing insight and counsel to community groups, industry associations and government bodies. Sado sits on the boards of organizations such as the Toronto Board of Trade, Legacy Private Trust, the Toronto Region Research Alliance and the Toronto Financial Service Alliance, and is the immediate past chair of the Trillium Health Centre, having ended her term just last week. In addition, she has served as past Chair of Colleges Ontario’s Committee of Presidents and sat on the boards of the YWCA of Greater Toronto, Junior Achievement and the Canadian Hearing Society Foundation.
Prior to joining George Brown College, Sado had a long and illustrious career at Bell Canada where she served in numerous roles over the course of her 25 years with the company. Her experience at Bell Canada served as an inspiration and foundation for the many changes she has implemented at George Brown College.
In 2010, Sado was inducted into the University Of Toronto’s prestigious Engineering Hall of Distinction, and awarded the Ontario Professional Engineers Gold Medal in 2007. She has also received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for her work with the YWCA of Greater Toronto, the Professional Engineers Ontario Citizenship Award for contributions to her community, and an Arbor Award from the University of Toronto.
