A sparkling comedy of manners, blending the brilliant wit of the Restoration with 18th-century sensibility, The School for Scandal affectionately satirizes fashionable society with its materialism, gossip and hypocrisy. Slander and clandestine love affair never go out of style which makes Sheridan's play as timely as ever. This sophisticated romp combines elegant language with earthy comedy to create a deliciously wicked world. Richard Brinsley Sheridan, the master of the satirical comedy of manners, was manager of the Drury Lane Theatre where he had a great influence on the theatre of his time. School for Scandal is studied around the world in high schools and theatre schools making him one of the well-known traditionalist playwrights second to Shakespeare. He later became a distinguished parliamentary orator. Miles Potter, a theatre icon, has been acting, directing and teaching in the Canadian theatre for almost thirty years. He began his career at Toronto's Theatre Passe Muraille helping create and performing in plays like The Farm Show, 1837: the Farmers Revolt, the Donnelly's and The West Show. He has taught at the University of Ottawa and the University of Missouri at Kansas City as well as at The National Theatre School. Miles is The Festival of Classics' first Consulting Artistic Director. Last year, Potter directed The Comedy of Errors, earning the Festival its first five-star review. Most recently he has directed several productions for The Stratford Festival (Medea, Good Mother, Romeo and Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew, Orpheus Descending) and The Festival of Classics (The Tempest, Comedy of Errors). The creative team also includes: Kelly Wolf (set and costumes); Steve Lucas (lighting).
