- RE: INFLUENZA IMMUNIZATION
The influenza immunization (seasonal and H1N1) are NOT mandatory, HOWEVER, students who do not obtain influenza immunization
may encounter challenges with clinical placement. Some placement agencies may require that students receive influenza
immunization and may require that students provide evidence of immunization.
Further, in the event of an outbreak any student without the vaccination may be denied access to the placement facility
thereby jeopardizing the successful completion of the clinical course. If you chose not to get the vaccine, George Brown
College cannot guarantee you an alternate placement facility.
Influenza immunization is available through the Toronto Public Health (see http://www.toronto.ca/health/cdc/h1n1/clinics.htm for
details). Also, George Brown College is seeking additional opportunities for students and faculty to obtain immunization
and will provide this information as soon as it becomes available.
Students who are experiencing flu symptoms should NOT attend placement or class (including exams). Please inform
your faculty advisor and/or preceptor if you are absent due to the flu. For online self-assessment of the flu,
please visit: http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/ccom/flu/h1n1/public/tools/assessment/default.aspx
If you have flu symptoms, please consult your health care provider. You may return to placement and classes 24 hours
after the fever and any symptoms other than a mild cough have been resolved. Typically, this takes five to eight days.
When returning to placement, you may be asked by your placement faculty to report to occupational health department.

Practical Nursing Program
This is a reminder to students who may choose to drop their general education course elective or generic skills course (COMP 10820) in order
to lighten the workload during a specific term to consider taking it in the spring/summer session. It must not be assumed that the mandated
electives [Lifespan Development (GSSC 1057) or Sociological Perspectives (GSSC 1120)] will be offered in the spring/summer session. The Sociology
course, GSSC 1120, does not have an equivalent. It is specifically designed for the Practical Nursing Program.
If a student is on OSAP and chooses not to take the elective and/or generic skills course during the term, there is no refund of monies. If
the student decides to take this elective in the spring/summer session, the student must pay for this. OSAP will not cover the cost.
It is a requirement that all core courses is completed for each semester in order to move forward to the next semester.
In order to graduate from the Practical Nursing Program, the student must have met the 2/3 breadth requirement; that is, general education
courses must have fallen into at least two of the three categories. The two mandated general education courses are Social Sciences. The remaining
two are student selected. The following configurations meet the 2/3 requirement to graduate.
