About Us

The Canadian healthcare system has experienced advances in knowledge, treatment, and prevention of disease, as well as a growing commitment to primary health care. The result? Unprecedented growth in the role nurses play in the delivery of healthcare services, and phenomenal professional opportunities.

In response to these changes, nurses now function in a broader spectrum of practice than the traditional hospital environment. In addition to caring for ill patients, nurses provide and co-ordinate care for individuals, families, groups, and communities in a variety of settings. Today's nursing practice encompasses care of the ill, primary healthcare, and health promotion.

  • Nurses providing direct care make the difference between life and death, pain and comfort, coping and despair.

  • Nurse researchers perform research that helps nurses and doctors give better, safer, and more effective care.

  • Nurses providing palliative care make the difference between dying in agony and dying in comfort.

  • Nurses engaged in primary health care educate patients and families about how to maintain good health.
