About the Conference

This year’s mental health conference theme, “What Keeps Us Going – Embracing Vulnerability and Fostering Resilience in Ourselves and Others” will be presented by Dr. Gabor Maté and will discuss and explore:

• Understand resilience and its connection to mental health issues and addictions
• Examine the impact of early trauma and neglect on the development of resilience
• Explore various ways of knowing: intellectual, experiential, intuitive and their relationship to resilience
• Examine our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs both within and outside of work
• Address the practitioners’ vulnerability to stress and compassion fatigue
• Create conditions that uncover our innate resilience and the resilience those we work with

Key Presenter Info

Dr. Gabor Maté
Gabor Maté M.D. is a physician, author, seminar leader and public speaker. He is a former medical columnist for The Vancouver Sun and The Globe and Mail. His four books are all Canadian bestsellers, published internationally in over a dozen languages on five continents. The most recently published, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction has been a #1 national bestseller and has been awarded the Hubert Evans prize for literary non-fiction.

For twenty years Dr. Maté had a family practice, and for seven years was Medical Coordinator of the Palliative Care Unit at Vancouver Hospital. For the past eleven years he has worked in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside with patients challenged by hard core drug addiction, mental illness and HIV. He has lectured at universities and colleges in the U.S. and Canada and has addressed many groups of physicians and health care providers, educators, law professionals, psychologists, therapists, parents, and other members of the lay public.

In 2009 Dr. Maté was honoured with an Outstanding Alumnus Award from Simon Fraser University. His next book, to be published in 2010, will be The Bully Syndrome: The Making and Unmaking of Bullies and Victims, co-written with developmental psychologist Dr. Gordon Neufeld.

Registration Fees: Includes full conference, continental breakfast and lunch.

$70.00 + GST = $73.50
$40.00 + GST = $42.00 [for full-time students]

• Registration fees are non-refundable unless notice of cancellation is received by 5:00 pm on February 26, 2010.

Resource Display

Resource Display participants will pay a $200.00 fee which will go towards our General Education & Access Scholarship Fund.  This fee includes:

• Attendance for two people at the conference, continental breakfast and lunch
• An opportunity to provide materials in the delegate’s kit
• Table to display your programs and/or services
