Imagine living in a country where you can’t express your opinions freely. Think about how hard it would be if your passion was writing,
but you couldn’t pursue it for fear of jail, danger to your family or even death. That is the reality for many writers around the world
who aren’t lucky enough to have the same freedom of expression that we have in Canada.
George Brown College participates in PEN Canada’s Writer in Exile program, which creates opportunities for exiled writers to have professional
careers in Canada. Writers considered for placements include authors, essayists, poets, journalists, playwrights, publishers, translators, editors
and screenwriters who worked in these professions in their native countries. As part of our unique program, writers participate in classroom sessions,
workshops and specialized presentations for students and staff in all areas.
We have been proud to host the following Lecturers-in-Residence:
- Benjamín Santamaría, Mexico
- Aaron Berhane, Eritrea
- Mir Hussain Mahdavi, Afghanistan
- Gordana Icevska, Macedonia
- Zdenka Acin, Yugoslavia
