In keeping with the requirements of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, George Brown College requires you take four (4) General Education courses in a four or six semester program. Many certificate programs also require you take General Education courses. Degree programs require you take a minimum of six (6) Liberal Studies courses. The requirement for General Education courses does not apply to students who are pursuing apprenticeships, post-diploma or post-graduate certificates.
General Education courses are designed to increase your awareness of the society and culture in which you live and work. General Education strengthens student’s skills in areas of critical analysis, problem solving, and communication, in the context of an exploration of topics with broad-based personal and / or societal importance.
Some of the programs in the College have one (1) or two (2) mandated General Education or Liberal Studies courses. Examples might include The History of Architecture, Introductory Sociology, Introductory Psychology, Human Growth & Development, Nutrition or Pharmacology & Physiology. In addition to these mandatory General Education courses you must choose elective General Education or Liberal Studies courses to meet the requirements for graduation.
The College policy also states that effective the 2003-4 academic year, “students take General Education courses from two of the three recognized categories.” This is part of the breadth requirement for General Education at GBC.
The categories or disciplines are as follows:
- Arts and Humanities (these courses begin with GHUM)
- Science (these courses begin with GSCI)
- Social Science (these courses begin with GSSC)
In order to meet the requirements for graduation you must ensure you choose General Education electives that allow you to meet the breadth requirement (2 of the 3 categories). There is no breadth requirement for Liberal Studies courses; however students are encouraged to complete a variety of courses in order to experience the breadth of curriculum.
If you have previous academic work from a recognized post secondary institution you may be eligible for an exemption(s). George Brown College students may apply for exemptions from General Education elective courses provided they meet the minimum exemption requirements (PDF). Transcripts and course outlines are required in order for faculty to assess your academic work. You are advised to submit your documentation, along with a completed Application for Course Exemption form as soon as you have enrolled as a full time student at George Brown College.
The selection of General Education/Liberal Studies courses varies by semester and by campus. Information about courses for the upcoming semester are available at the Student Service Centres and on the Web prior to registration.
