George Brown College Celebrates International Education Week

International Education Week, November 13 to 17, 2006.

Every year during the third week of November, countries around the world celebrate International Education Week (IEW). Please check back later to see what exciting events are being planned for this year.

What is International Education Week?
International Education Week is about raising awareness and understanding of international education and its benefits to Canada, to Canadian educational institutions and to all Canadians. Every year during the third week of November international education celebrations take place in over 85 countries around the globe.

Why is International Education Important?
The world is increasingly interdependent and international education helps to promote an exchange of knowledge and skills across cultures, creates lasting friendships and partnerships, facilitates the development of intercultural competencies, allows for joint problem solving, promotes transfer of learning, and increases opportunities in the global marketplace.

What are some International Education Activities?
International education includes various types of activities: International students studying in Canada; Canadians studying and teaching abroad; International exchange of faculty, staff, learning technologies and methodologies; Internationalization of Canadian curricula and campus life; and making a contribution to improving education in developing countries.

What are George Brown's International Education Activities?
The College has been addressing the training and educational needs of Canadian and International youth and adults since 1967. Located in Toronto, one of the most multicultural, internationally-connected cities in the world, George Brown is committed to providing students with the international competencies they will need to function effectively in an increasingly diverse and global job market.

Through our international students, our study abroad initiatives and our international project work, we gain further knowledge, skills and an intercultural awareness that enriches the learning environment for all. The International Centre supports College staff and students to engage internationally:

  • Students from over 100 countries have come to George Brown for their education and often this is their first international experience. Currently over 1,300 international students are studying at the College.

  • Our students have participated in Study Abroad initiatives to Cambodia, China, Cuba, El Salvador, France, Italy, Jamaica and Hong Kong.

  • The College has participated in international projects for over 30 years and we continue to strengthen our international networks. We have partnered with institutions and organizations in Barbados, Bosnia, China, Egypt, Hungary, India, Ireland, Jamaica, Jordan, Korea, Kosovo, Mexico, Poland, Samoa, Saudi Arabia, St. Lucia, South Africa, Taiwan and Russia.
