EAP Program

George Brown College’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program is a full-time program designed to give you the skills you need to be successful in Canada. With a strong focus on your academic and career success, EAP provides you with a welcoming environment in which to develop your English abilities.

EAP is divided into 9 levels of 8 weeks each. Upon graduation from Level 8 (with at least two EAP levels completed at George Brown), you will receive an Ontario College Certificate, a widely-recognized form of accreditation. Successful completion of Level 8 meets the English language requirement for most professional programs at George Brown College.

In addition, George Brown College has signed an articulation agreement establishing exit standards that allow EAP graduates to satisfy English language proficiency requirements at 14 participating colleges, without requiring further admissions testing for a diploma program.

ESL for Business is an option is for students planning a full-time academic Business program. Students may choose to enter after completing level 6 in the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program. It focuses on real-life communication skills required in business settings.

EAP Level Placement

Applicants have 2 options for determining level placement

  1. EAP applicants who do not have an IELTS or TOEFL score will need to take the EAP level placement test after arrival in Toronto.
  2. EAP applicants who have an IELTS or TOEFL score can submit their score rather than writing the GBC level placement test. With the appropriate overall TOEFL or IELTS scores and the minimum Writing and Speaking score requirements, student can be placed directly into an EAP level appropriate for their abilities. Please see below for the chart of scores for the TOEFL and IELTS tests that will allow you direct entry into the GBC EAP program.

Please note you may either take the EAP level placement test or choose to submit IELTS or TOEFL, but you may not choose both.
