The George Brown School of Deaf and Deafblind Studies has created a number of programs that immerse students in American Sign Language, one of the three official languages of the Deaf community in Canada. These programs expose students to Deaf and Deafblind culture and the social issues that this consumer group faces. As the needs of the Deaf and Deafblind community change, the School updates its curriculum, develops new programs and establishes educational pathways to ensure that graduates are prepared for current and future trends in the sector.

Our overarching educational philosophy combines group learning experiences and the application of theory
to practice. Since the School was established, its goals and values have aimed to:

  • Facilitate student success with strong connections to the field through work placements, program advisory committees and other relationships
  • Encourage participation and influence both inside and outside the College through community and institutional partnerships
  • Foster academic excellence through innovative program design and delivery
  • Embrace and celebrate diversity in students and staff, including international students, placements, and partnerships
  • Engage in applied research that benefits the community and ensures current classroom content
  • Establish a culture of lifelong learning guided by passion and commitment to human rights, equity and social justice

Long-standing connections to external agencies and associations give students the chance to participate in placements that provide optimal learning experiences, mentorship and net-working opportunities.

Current partnerships include The Royal Ontario Museum and the Art Gallery of Ontario which provides students with the opportunity to work directly with consumers. Other new opportunities have included international placements in the USA and Italy.
