First Health Sciences Students Awards Ceremony 2008

Students Awards CeremonyOn May 14 2008, we celebrated our students’ achievements.  35 graduating students from the Schools of Dental Health, Health Services Management and Health and Wellness received awards from our centre.  The awards honoured students in the categories of “Support of Fellow Classmates”, “Academic Merit” and “Leadership”.  We also had 7 students from various schools who received awards and scholarships.

The celebration was a total success as we had almost 100 people between staff and students who attended the luncheon at La Dolce Vita restaurant.

Together We Care: Ontario Long-term Care Association and Ontario Retirement Communities Association Convention April 14, 2008

Health Leaders Institute November 2007

Dean Lorie Shekter-Wolfson delivered a closing keynote entitled "Silos belong on farms: Cultivating patient-centred care through collaborative learning” at the third Health Leader’s Institute held November 12-16th, 2007 at the BMO Institute for Learning.

Collaborative Client-Centered Education, December 2007

It's Wednesday and a group of 20 four and five-year-olds arrive from the Scotia Bank Day Care via the TTC for their weekly Kiddfitt class.  They are excited about their upcoming 30 minute class of activity, stretching, and motor development at Casa Loma campus, shared by their teachers and lead by a group of second-year Fitness and Lifestyle Management students. At the end of the class, each child receives a coloring book on nutritious alternatives and a newsletter to take home to their parents with healthy living suggestions. [Read the article ...]

St. Michael's Hospital Partnership

In January, George Brown College launched an innovative partnership with St. Michael's Hospital to prepare students for future collaborative practice.

George Brown College Health Sciences students in nursing, dental hygiene and fitness and wellness began working together with second year St. Michael's medical students in the College's newly expanded Interprofessional Learning Clinic, located at 175 Kendal Avenue on GBC's Casa Loma campus.

Health in the City 2005 at George Brown College

Who would have thought that brushing your teeth, washing your hands and packing a healthy lunch could be so much fun?

The 200 middle and high school students who took part in Health in the City 2005 at George Brown College, the all-day event focused on health care, had a great time doing all of these things and more.

Students are invited to annual events such as "Technorama, Canadian International Dental Conference", the Ontario Dental Association's spring meeting.

Dental Technology School
Includes trips to manufacturers Dentsply (York, Pennsylvania); Ivoclar Vivodent (Amherst, New York); Bego Canada (Quebec City).

Fitness and Lifestyle: Employment Career Fair
Preparations for this annual event start with staff, the student organizing committee and the college counselling department. Workshops are provided to third year students on a variety of topics including resume, cover letter writing, planning a personal portfolio and interview techniques. The employment fair brings together fitness students and agency representatives from the variety of industry sectors including commercial, community, corporate, clinical and private / entrepreneurial. Contacts are made for potential placement and employment opportunities. Resumes are submitted and interviews are arranged. Further networking takes place over lunch. An invaluable experience for students and guests many of whom are FLMP alumni.

Fitness Expo gets pumped up with record numbers.

The George Brown College Annual Fitness Exhibition celebrated its 25th anniversary with 900 high school students and 50 teachers — the largest crowd to date. [Read more...]

Fitness and Lifestyle: Aerobathon
The Aerobathon is an annual October event run by the FLMP and Athletic departments. This four-hour themed event raises funds for the Athletic Department's varsity programs, Fitness and Lifestyle Management Program and the United Way of Greater Toronto.

Hearing Instrument Specialist
There will be an Open House at George Brown College on Saturday, November 8, 2003. Call to confirm times closer to the event. The HIS lab will be open to view the technology of the profession and students as well as faculty will be available to answer any questions you might have regarding the program or career opportunities.

In May of each year, May Fest is held at the St. Lawrence Market in Toronto. This is an opportunity for the public to see products and speak with manufacturers of devices.

HIS students also attend the annual Symposium hosted by AHIP in April/May. Symposium provides an opportunity to network and have direct contact with both prospective employers and the manufacturing sector.

Competitions

Dental Technology
During the 6th semester students participate in a competition for the best all ceramic crown sponsored by Ivocar-Vivdent.

Fitness and Lifestyle
Top 3rd year students receive the George Brown Personal Training Certificate. This award is recognized by the Sports Clubs of Canada a Level 1 (National equivalent) PT certification. The competencies have also been recognized by the Canadian Fitness Professionals and our graduates can add the Can Fit Pro PT Specialist certification to their credentials.
