Health & Wellness - Bringing It All Together

George Brown College
St. James Campus
290 Adelaide St. East

Health and Wellness:  Bringing it all together was the theme of George Brown College’s 4th Annual Health in the City event.  The Honourable George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care brought greetings from the Ministry to open the event and the conference was moderated by Christina Cherneskey, Health Show Host, CFRB.

On November 21, 2007, community partners and health-care professionals came together at this event to explore how complementary medicine is working together with traditional medical practices.  Statistics show that a significant number of people seek out alternative therapies both as a prevention tool and to manage their illness.

With this increase in areas such as vitamin therapy and the introduction of additional regulated and non-regulated professions, Bringing it all together addressed how health professionals and their patients are increasingly integrating complementary medicine into their practice and routines.

The program featured a keynote address from Dr. Heather Boon, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto, and one of the Founding Directors of the Canadian Interdisciplinary Network for Complementary and Alternative Medicine Research.

The keynote was followed by a panel of experts who provided their perspectives to the discussion:

George Brown College’s first Collaborative Practice Health-Care Award was presented to the team at the Rapid Access Palliative Radiotherapy Program from Cross Cancer Institute, Edmonton, Alberta.  Their achievements in palliative-intent radiotherapy successfully demonstrated how teams shared information and worked together to improve patient care.  Dr. Alysa Fairchild was on hand to accept the award on behalf of her team.

George Brown is among the first in the college system nationwide to embark on an innovative, practical and interprofessional approach to health-care education as the foundation for Canada’s health-care renewal.  The following Honourary Committee members supported Health in the City 2007 and George Brown’s vision of the future of health education:

"We know that patients are using many different products and therapies to maintain and promote their health as well as to treat illnesses. It is important to create a health-care system which facilitates communication among different health-care providers and patients. True patient-centred care can only be achieved when we find ways to integrate the best of all effective forms of health care into coordinated plans that are driven by patient needs and delivered by teams of caregivers that are working together to ensure the best outcomes possible."

"If health-care providers are expected to work together and share expertise in a team environment, it makes sense that their education and training should prepare them for this type of working arrangement...Interprofessional education and collaboration is essential to achieving effective delivery of health care."
