Health and Wellness: What will it take?
On November 23rd, 2006, George Brown College hosted the 3rd
annual Health in the City event themed, "Health and Wellness:
What Will It Take?" Health in the City is an annual event
presented by the George Brown College Centres for Health Sciences
and Community Services. The event included a Breakfast Forum,
Interactive Health Circles with faculty and students, and facility
tours.
George Brown College's Health in the City got off to an early
start with a breakfast keynote address by Nora Spinks, President,
Work-Life Harmony.
Nora offered her perspective on how people can lead healthier
lifestyles by understanding the importance of approaching health
holistically and creatively. Spinks encouraged healthcare providers
to approach healthcare from the perspective of patients, employ
a wellness model and integrate technology to improve patient care.

Health in the City Survey
George Brown conducted a survey among middle-school students participating
in the Health in the City event. The survey gauged the students'
knowledge of health science career opportunities and their awareness
of their own health and wellness. [Find

Breakfast Forum 7:00 - 9:15am
Open to health professionals, community partners, guidance counselors
and educators, the day began with a breakfast and keynote address
that tackled "Health and Wellness: What will it take?" The
keynote address by Nora
Spinks, Founder and President of Work-Life
Harmony Enterprises, discussed some of the current challenges in
our health system and how interprofessional education and health
promotion can link to improve the health of Ontarians. Moderated
by Jennifer Tryon, Health Specialist, Global National News, the
keynote was followed by a panel of experts who brought a variety
of important perspectives to the discussion including:

Participants made their way through
interactive Health
Circles designed to raise awareness of careers in the health
profession and reinforce George Brown's commitment to
interprofessional education. Health Circles highlighting the
theme of Health and Wellness included:

- Keeping it Together (Psycho-social
Health)
- Pump it Up! (Muscles and Joints)
- The Senses
- You Are What You Eat (Oral and Digestive Health)
